History Of Aberdare

Princess Elizabeth ascended the British throne while on a honeymoon at the treetops lodge in the aberdare national park in 1952, following the death of her father king George VI. Lord Baden Powell, founder of the Boy scouts movement was buried in the nearby Nyeri town. The park has the ‘first tree hotel in Africa’ and was a Mau Mau rebel hideaway during the struggle for independence in Kenya.

The park created in the 1950s, forms part of Aberdare Mountain ranges. The Rift Valley is incomplete without the ranges, which form part of the Eastern edge. At an altitude of 7,000-14,000 ft it is an eye catching water catchment. It supplies Thompsons falls, channeling water to rivers Tana, Athi, part of the Central Rift and the Northern drainage basin.

Trees sprawling along a 10,000 ft contour forest and shrubs bordering another 7,000 ft contour form a natural union of forest and shrubs. A 278 Km electric fence being constructed by the Ark organization will minimize human- wildlife conflict.
