History

Established in 1974, very small and covering an area of only 392 square feet but worth a diamond mine, Amboseli game reserve supports a fragile ecosystem with over 50 species of mammals and 400 species of birds. Amboseli is renowned for its big game and its remarkably striking scenes. The thorny bush country is part of the five main habitats including the acacia woodland, the vast open plains, part of the Pleistocene lake basin (dusty dry land) and the swamps/marshes, which enjoy the damp company of a seasonal river at the floor of the park. It is enlisted as one of the International biospheres in the world.

Amboseli national park owes its name to the Maasai word ‘empusel’ which in local Maasai dialect, means ‘salty dust’. The distinctive dusty nature of the park is due to volcanicity. Scientists declare that possibly 10,000 years ago, Mt.kilimanjaro, 19,340 foot high, hit the roof and spread hot lava 25 miles away .The snow capped crests drew filmmakers and photographers who started flocking the in since 1930s. The Maasai deem the land around Amboseli game reserve a vital rangeland and have kept a vigilant eye forestalling the extinction of the 1980s poaching days.
