Kenya Vacations
History
Arabuko draws its name from the local Swahili dialect that refers to the forest
being in the possession of Arabs during the rule of Malindi by the Mazrui family.
The sad history of Gedi ruins lingers in the air as the location is at the brink
of the forest. The colonial government
in Kenya promoted the park into a crown land and later after independence; it
was declared a national park in January of 1976. A section of the forest was then
gazetted into a protected area in the following year after the bird sanctuaries
and the butterfly pavilion were established.
