Kenya Vacations
Chyulu Hills
In the dry Eastern part of Kenya, no one would believe that such a forsaken piece
of land with barely anything to feed on would be endowed with the great beasts
on earth as well as some astounding geographical features. The
ash cones, volcanic craters, and ash flows make the lions and
buffalos, the leopards and zebras
, the most adaptive species in their own families. Survival here means much more
than hunting skills or instincts; the will power to endure the harsh terrain is
the hallmark of the best survivor and the animals in the reserve seem to have internalized
that.
The words to describe the
Chyulu Hills National reserve should be cast in iron at least to remotely
capture the solid rock reality of the famed Chyulu Hills. Found in the wilderness
of Ukambani 30km South west of Kibwezi town, the reserve itself is situated 190
km South-East of Nairobi .
Chyulu Reserve is a creation in progress. The spells of recent volcanic activity,
which culminated into hordes of ash cones and craters that make up the hills today,
attest to this marvel of nature to this marvel of nature. When it rains here, the permeable rocks of the
hills collect the water and redirect it down to feed the Mzima springs
below, slowly draining into Rivers
Tsavo and Galana. The vegetation remains indigenous, akin to the Garden
of Eden as left by Adam and Eve.
Best time to Visit
The best Season to embark on such a journey is any time except
the month of April to July when it rains heavily.
