History

With typical volcanic cones such as the Shetani (Swahili-“Devil”) and the Barren lava flows, the Chyulu hills volcanic mountain range is the land of bees and honey. It is neatly carpeted by volcanic ash, stretching across the landscape forming the famed Yatta plateau. This slim and edifying setting is an ethereal scene from the futuristic outer-space movie ‘Star Trek’. Commissioned in 1983 as Chyulu hills National reserve, the area was once a shrine of the Akamba and Maasai people.
