Kenya Vacations
Lamu Island
Lamu is an idyllic Island that speaks to the heart and soul. The town has endured
in its own particular culture though it has had a lot of influence from the many
visitors who have been here including the Portuguese explorers, Turkish traders
and the Omani Arabs. The beautiful tropical Island has rolling
dunes, endless beaches and a mysterious fascinating history that resembles its winding
streets. The Island has no vehicles thus donkeys, bicycles and dhows remain the
dominant form of transport. The uniqueness of Lamu is coupled by the fact that it
is host to three Museums and a Fort with an impressive exhibition space.
The town is a national monument with many architectural characteristics unrivaled
by none other in East Africa. The Island is served by an Airstrip at Manda Island
which also hosts private Charters. There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi , Mombasa
, Malindi and Diani Beach . Thus air is the best way to access
Lamu. Strolling the water front, exploring the town, relaxing on the beaches and
attending indoor and outdoor
cultural activities that include traditional dhow races, bao games, henna
paintings, donkey races and Islamic calligraphy competitions are among the ways
to spend a day in Lamu.
Takwa ruins on Manda Island are a place worth visiting for a few hours or even a
day with overnight camping. Sailing on dhows is the way to connect from Lamu to
Manda. Amazingly at times the dhows don`t make it to the very end of the narrow
channel flanked by mangroves; this leaves one with the only option of wading through
the ankle or knee deep salty water. This sets the mood of entering the serene and
majestic ruins as well as making one feel like an explorer. This makes a trip to
Lamu a romantic
and hypnotically exotic experience that can become a life long affair.
