Malindi Town
Malindi is the second major town on the coastal lines about 110km north of Mombasa.
Malindi is an excellent base for visiting places like Gedi ruins and Arabuko Sokoke Forest. The town hosts the oldest
Marine National Park
in Kenya established in 1968. The Park is endowed with fringing reefs, sea grass
beds, high fish diversity, and
coral gardens in the lagoons, marine mammals (dolphins) mangroves, shorebirds,
turtles and mudflats. Malindi has journeyed through the eras of the early Chinese,
the Arab traders, the Portuguese sailors and European settlers with much pomp and
flair as this has transformed it into a reputable tourist destination.
Malindi is served by a domestic Airport and a highway between Mombasa and Lamu.
Bicycles (which are readily hired) are the best way to get around Malindi and its
environs. Restaurants and lodges here include Malindi Hotel, Hotel Bargains, Africa
Dream Village and Angel`s Bay Mambrui among others. The services here include delicacies
that range from local flavors to international cuisines. The coral reefs that are
seasonally undated by silty waters from the Sabaki river, the local wood artifacts
that include unique furniture and the famous Lamu beds, a coral pillar erected by
Vasco Da Gama in 1498, the Juma Mosque and a palace on the beach are among the things
to be savored in Malindi.
