Mombasa
The Coastal Town of Mombasa is
the second largest city in Kenya and is the largest Port on the Coast of East Africa.
The city is referred to as `Kisiwa cha mvita` in Swahili, which
means `Island of war` due to the many changes in its ownership. Mombasa `Tusks`
that spell the letter `M` for Mombasa welcome you to the heart of the city. The
Tusks were built in 1952 to commemorate the coming of Queen Elizabeth to the town.
Mombasa is greatly valued as a Tourist(safari
) destination because of its historical significance, rides on traditional trade
ships (dhows), architectural buildings and Museums that tell stories of slave trade,
a string of beautiful
beaches , cosmopolitan character, tropical ambiance, diverse marine

The history of Mombasa dates back over 1500 years when it started as a trading port.
In 1498 a Portuguese explorer `Vasco Da Gama` landed here to spread the Christian
faith and expand the Portuguese trading area. The 16th century Fort Jesus that has
witnessed many battles including Kenya's struggle for independence is a popular
attraction. The Fort has a Museum that displays different artifacts like weapons
(canons) used to defend the Fort, torture rooms and prison cells where slaves were
kept in captivity before being traded. In addition there is a bell that was used
to inform the locals to hide from slave capturers. Gedi ruins designated as a National
Museum is also worth visiting.
The Mombasa Old Town and the Hindu Temple are among the symbols
of Mombasa's cultural diversity. A tour at Mamba village is amazing as you witness
a bloody-thirsty crocodile fighting for food during feeding time. The largest animal
Sanctuary in Mombasa is Bamburi Nature Trail that houses enormous variety of flora
and fauna. A Bombolulu workshop founded in 1969 is a project for the physically
disabled. It produces various artifacts that are exported to more than 20 countries.
Shimba hills National Park is also a place to visit. Ordering for fleshly caught
see food on a dhow as you watch the sunset gives you the urge to embark on an exciting
nightlife in the clubs and casinos that keep you going all night long.
