Watamu
Watamu is a place to spend time marveling at the wonders of the sea. Watamu`s international
reputation is due to its shorelines that feature most stunning pure white sand,
starling beautiful beaches
and offshore gorgeous coral formations arranged in three bays: Blue Bay, Turtle
Bay, and Watamu Bay. Watamu-Malindi
Marine National Park is the finest Marine National Park in Kenya and one
of the best Snorkeling
and diving areas on the East Africa. It`s coral gardens are a few meters from the
shores and are home to nearly 600 species of fish, 100 species of stony coral and
other weird and wonderful sea creatures like mollusks, crustaceans and invertebrates.
Mida creek is a mangrove edged salt water creek, with its renowned dramatic water
currents, coral outcrops, kingfishers, tangle ribbons of channels, sandbanks and
crab plovers. The creek is ideal for bird watching, fishing, mangrove walks and
leisure trips.
Watamu is 120kms north of Mombasa and 28kms north of Malindi that has a domestic
Airport. 10kms from Mombasa- Malindi highway is Watamu beach whose road end at Mida
creek. Matatus and taxis operate the road. Watamu Beach Hotel and Blue Bay Beach
Hotel among others accommodate visitors and also offer a range of local flavors
to international cuisines.
Arabuko-Sokoke Forest
is the last large piece of indigenous local forest in Kenya. The forest is a
key site to surviving six
endangered species of birds and three species of mammals globally. Also
on the forest are buffalo, elephant, leopard, hyena and around 260 species of butterflies.
Gedi ruin is a place to spot monkeys jumping the trees, listening them crashing
the branches and seeing then following you around. Other activities around Watamu
include Deep-sea fishing, Boat and Dhow trips, Long walks, Swimming, Sunbathing,
and Horse riding Seeing Whales, Dolphins, Turtles and Whale Sharks. In fact a visit
to Watamu is a Safari on the sea.
