Kakamega Forest

It takes a little more than a glance to know that a forest rich with exotic species of trees in the middle of African frenzy of diminishing forestland is a golden egg. The Kakamega Forest National Reserve, 15 kms away from Kakamega town in western Kenya is the goose that laid the golden egg giving thousands of plant and animal species a place to call home. This is the only remaining portion of the once gigantic guinea Congolian forest believed to be the origin of the largest group of people in Africa, the Bantu. Since the beginning of time, trees and herbs from the forest have been used to heal illnesses, which have defied modern medicine. Scientists have also acknowledged the role of the trees in carbon dioxide and nitrogen cycling in the ecosystem.

Kakamega forest park is raised from the ashes of a long lived tropical forest with trees that are as old as 100 years. It is one of the richest areas for resource inventory in Environmental planning in Kenya given that the forest still maintains a considerable part of its natural forest. Environmentalists agree that it’s an important water catchment area and suitable for research in early forms of plant species.
