History

Between the lakeside town of Kisumu, the Kakamega Forest national reserve is a mere 50km stretch northbound just near the Nandi escarpment .The park has a forest cover extending over 240km2 through a surging terrain that forms a vital water catchment area beneath. Tall and massive standing trees such the Oak the Elgon teak, Croton and orchids create the roof of the forest. After it was gazzetted in May 1985, it meant that over 380 species of plants in Kakamega and the adjacent Kisere reserves were safe from extinction. River Isiukhu’s and Yala’s still waters run deep in the reserve and out to Lake Victoria . This is the only tropical rain forest found in Kenya today.
