History

Lake Nakuru National Park was established in 1961 and officially gazetted in 1968. It borrows its name from the Maasai word nakuru, meaning dust or a dusty place. Lake Nakuru is a part of the the great Rift Valley which at 4,000 miles long and 35 miles wide is a world famous tourist attraction in its own right. The Great Rift Valley was formed due to geological tension in the earth's crust that caused a deep depression, while forcing the sides upwards. The Rift Valley gave rise to many lakes that have become a habitat for diverse wildlife, among them Lake Nakuru, which in turn became the center piece of Lake Nakuru National Park.
