Kenya Vacations
Lake Baringo Kenya
Lake Baringo is endowed with a sheer variety of wildlife including the largest variety
of Goliath heron in East Africa found in the rocky Isle of Gibraltar. The beautiful
lake was first described in 1883 by Joseph Thompson. The lake is surrounded by volcanic
ranges that stretch as far as the eye can see. A Geyser once erupted in April 2004
reaching a maximum height of 80m. The Geyser attracted many Tourists as the World
`s highest then. The lakes chocolate waters (due to the soils in the region) change
in tonality during the day depending on the color of the sky. A memorable sight
around the lake is the amazing sight of the large hippos emerging from the waters
to graze the lawns in noisy groups in the moonlight pastures.
Access to Lake Baringo is directly from
Nakuru by bus or private transport. Lake Baringo Club and Island Camp accommodate
overnight travelers. Ol Kokwe Island in the middle of the lake is home to the Njemps
tribe a unique pastoral community who also eat fish. A boat trip to the Island is
ideal for a glimpse at their local handcrafts and dances, sighting birds, hippos,
monitor lizards and plenty of crocodiles lying on water edges or swimming the shallows
hunting waterfowl.
In addition the lake offers camel rides, sport fishing, water sports (ski, wind-surfing),
a trip to lake Baringo National Reserve and a visit to Baringo Museum that has crocodiles,
monitor lizards, species of snakes and a pit shared by the endangered tortoise and
harmless stripe bellied sand snakes. The beauty of Baringo and her surroundings
is magnificent. Watching the dazzling array of color bird life, interaction with
the Njemps fishermen and the spectacular sunsets provides an exhilarating memory
of the lake.
