Lake Bogoria Kenya
Lake Bogoria was first discovered by the Kampala Bishop James Hannington in 1885
while heading for his diocese following Thomsonfs route. The volcanically active
lake is lined with spouting geysers. The lake has the highest number of true geysers
in Africa. In addition the lake has around 200 hot springs at three onshore sites
while the other hot springs discharge directly from the lake floor. The soda waters
of the lake contain the blue -green algae which tend to attract massive flocks of
flamingoes seasonally hence the lake is often carpeted with pink. Framing the shallow
waters pinned with flamingoes is superb scenery of bluish hills populated with dry
bush, grassland and riverine.
Lake Bogoria is a place to enjoy the spectacular African scenery in solitude. The
lake is situated 260kms from Nairobi
and 25kms from the lake Baringo Airstrip, which Charter flights can use. Access
to Bogoria is a diversion from the
Nakuru - Baringo road via Marigat. Traveling by private transport is the
best way to visit Lake Bogoria
as getting to the lake itself is very difficult as there is no public transport.
To stay at the Lake, there are several accommodations near by. There are two campsites
south of the lake.
The lakes fresh water springs draw an abundance of birds and wildlife. Local features
include the Siracho Escarpment, the Kesubo Swamp, shores lined with Gazelle, Zebra,
Baboons, Fish Eagles preying on the Flamingoes and an opportunity to spot the majestic
Greater Kudu.Activities that can be carried around the Lake include camping, boat
rides, wildlife walks, camel walks, visiting the local Njemps village, having fun
and baths around the Hot springs that provide a natural spa. All these will keep
visitors occupied around the Lake of sublime magnificence with its fascinating local
history.
