Malindi-Watamu marine national park
The Malindi-Watamu marine national park is the harbinger of
marine parks in Kenya. Its history, like its people is rich and elegant.
The Arab architecture and the Italian presence
serenade this picturesque work of nature; underneath, the drying bones and indomitable
spirits of soldiers who fought frequent wars with Mombasa lay still. The rich marine life
is as absorbing as it is enticing. Mangroves rule the undergrowth
along the coastline but the coconut trees towering tens of feet
above are unrivalled. Sitting across the verandah of a beach cottage,
one can watch the beautiful sunset /sunrise or the temperamental
waves while sipping the sweet coconut juice, as the sweet breeze
caresses them.
Bequeathed with biodiversity
such as tassel reefs, coral precincts
and twisted lagoons, Malindi-Watamu National Park finds its place
amongst the best parks in Kenya. With patch reefs clinging all the way to the periphery
of barracuda strait, Malindi-Watamu Marine Park experiences the
monsoon winds which turn the waters of
malindi cove scarlet, a result of the plume spread, despite the
seasonal River Sabaki northbound emptying its clear waters in the
reefs.
Best Time to Visit
All year round, one can decide to visit the Park although it is highly recommended
that you travel around September and March, which
are the dry months.
