History

Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1979, Malindi-Watamu marine National Park is the first established park of its kind in Kenya. Since its inception in 1968, it has continued to grow in popularity alongside the Gedi ruins and Arabuko Sokoke National park. Malindi-Watamu National Park lays South of malindi town extending to Mida creek, commanding a regal view of the creek beyond. The famous Vasco da Gama pillar stands erect along the even coastline, which runs more than 30 meters of land, and form the pillar to Watamu , eating up part of the sea up to 300 feet. Loved and enjoyed by royalty, the current princess of Monaco still keeps a private cottage by the beach.
