Kenya Vacations
Meru National Park
This is the least known and less visited park in Kenya. It is an
interesting group of protected areas along the river Tana. The Mwingi, Bisandi,
Kora and Rahole reserves together form the Meru national park. Nyambene
Mountain supplies the areas with plenty of water through the copious
streams flowing into the park. The hilly Northwestern side with its rich volcanic
soil gets a generous amount of rainfall from the neighboring Mount Kenya forest . Towards the east, it uniformly
levels down as the soil profile predominantly remains alluvial volcanic.
This solitary piece of wilderness lies north east of Nairobi along the equator covering approximately 87km2
and lying 80 Kms from Meru town. Joy Adamson depicted the true
nature of the park with her captivating story of a tamed lion returned
to the wilderness in her book titled eBorn freef, which became
a movie production. The wealth of the park in ecosystems and beautiful sceneries
is unmatched. The forested swamp and savannah area networked by fifteen perennial
rivers is what makes this park unique. All rivers empty into the Tana River, marking
the southern border of the park.
Best time to Visit
The park can be visited anytime of year.
