History

Crafted in the 12th century AD, the town of Mombasa was a strategic commercial hub, thanks to its deep-sea port at Kilindini. It was also a killing field for thousands of Portuguese soldiers and civilians who were kept under siege for 2 ½ years and died of hunger and thirst. The Marine Park receives visitors from every corner of the globe, driven by either pleasure or thirst for knowledge. The deep Arabian cultural imprints of the 14th Century are notable in the architectural designs of the oldest buildings in town. The hospitality and humility of the people is astounding. The culinary is a blend of Indian, African and Swahili. The park was gazzeted in the early 1990s when the turtle soup craze hit the country .
