Mt. Elgon is Home to about 400 elephants, antelopes, leopard, and the protected Colobus and blue monkeys, some buffaloes, leopards, the, giant forest hogs, waterbucks and various other types of herbivores. Over 240 species of birds have been recorded. The mountain is covered by red laterite soil which favors the growth of thick undergrowth. The huge Elgon teak and cedar trees, some over 80ft. tall dominate the forest.
