Kenya Vacations
Giraffe Centre
Giraffe Centre was established in an attempt to save the endangered Rothschild
giraffe. The Rothschild giraffe had lost its natural habitat in western
Kenya due sub-division and resettlement and only 130 Rothschild giraffe were remaining.
With the land divided up and fenced off, the Rothschild giraffe's future looked
bleak. In 1979, Jock Leslie Melville and his wife setup African
Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W
Kenya ) in USA to raise money to relocate five groups of the giraffe to
safe areas. Four herds of the Rothschild giraffe were relocated to lake Nakuru National Park , Nasalot Game Reserve, Ruma
National Park and Mwea Game Reserve.
There are now 300 Rothschild giraffes all safe in various National Parks and Reserves
in Kenya. The Giraffe Centre is home for about 14 resident Rothschild giraffes.
Recently, young giraffes born at the Giraffe center were moved to Sergoit ranch
in Eldoret, Soy Sambu ranch near
Lake Elemetaita and Kigio Conservancy. At the Giraffe Centre, you will be
able to hand feed, observe and even kiss the friendly Rothschild giraffes. Visitors
at the Giraffe Centre can also take a guided walk though the sanctuary nature
trail. The Giraffe Centre helps educate Kenyan children about Kenya's
wildlife and environment while giving local and international visitors a chance
to come into close contact with these remarkable, graceful animals.
