Karen Blixen Museum

Karen Blixen Museum is located on the outskirts of Nairobi and is the farmhouse where Karen Blixen lived from 1914 to 1931. Karen Blixen is popularly known for her book "out of Africa" which was published in the late 1930's. The red tiled house was build 1910 and has been preserved as a museum. She bought the 6,000 acres land property in 1917. She developed 600 acres into a coffee plantation while remaining was maintained as natural forests. The house was presented to the Kenyan government by the Danish government at independence. The Danish government renovated the house and its was used in the filming of " Out of Africa ", one of the best film about colonial Africa. The film featured one of the retired trains from Nairobi Railway Museum. The Karen Blixen Museum was opened to the public in 1986. It is beautiful colonial house that along with the lovely gardens have been restored to their former glory.


Karen Blixen also known as Karen Dinesen left for Africa on ship from Naples in 1913. She married her Swedish cousin named Baron Bror von Blixen Finecke and moved to Kenya where they established a coffee plantation in the outskirts of Nairobi. They separated in 1921 and were divorced in 1925. She later met Denys Finch Hatton with whom she lived from 1926 to 1931. Finch, an English big game hunter was killed in an air crash during his frequent visits to Tsavo . After that, Karen moved back to Denmark in 1931 where she wrote the famous memoir Out Of Africa. She died on September 7th 1962.
