If you ever wondered about the origin of man, perhaps The Koobi Fora museum,
the undisputed cradle of mankind will settle your doubts about
the existence of early man. Also home to the 45ft long crocodile fossils,
found in Turkana District in Kenya, are enough proof of the veracity
of legends of dinosaurs. Millions of year old fossils have raised debates over the
sojourn of man on earth and where he first appeared. The Turkana Boy aka Nakitorome,
the only complete skeleton of ancient human estimated to have died at the age of
12 measuring around 5 foot 2, was discovered in the marshlands of the Lake Turkana region. It is believed to be more than
1.5 million years old. Other human fossils such as the remains of the Australopithecus
species have also been found in the same area before.
Down at the coast, Allidina Visram High School in Mombasa is famous not for the age old buildings which houses
the school. One of the oldest institutions in the country, rich with the ancient
Arab and Indian culture, the building was erected in the 1800s by long dead Indian
merchants. The Arabic architectural design that went into constructing
the single storey building has withstood 100 years of weather and is one of the
oldest sophisticated historical buildings in the country. Other educational sites
in Kenya include the infamous Shimoni caves which were the depot
for thousands of slaves awaiting transit during the Atlantic slave trade. The famous
fort Jesus in Mombasa built in 1400s has a history
of conquests and defeats, the death of those who fought for the control of the rich
Indian Ocean trade all interred within its walls. Up country, The Great Rift Valley that cuts across 14
counties in Africa is the mother of many geographical features such as craters,
table mountains among others in Kenya.
