Health while on Safari

Malaria is common in parts of western and coastal Kenya, and it is advisable to take anti malaria medication before your arrival. While on safari, and especially if you camp out, make sure to use a mosquito repellant and a mosquito net. Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants as you take evening walks to avoid mosquito bites. Vaccinations for diseases such as yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A may be required, and it is best to inquire from your travel agent before you travel.

Pay attention to any news of disease outbreaks during your travel. While chemists and pharmacies are available in most towns in Kenya it is best to carry any prescription medicine with you. Also bring along common medicine such as painkillers and eye drops. While water in most hotels and restaurants is safe to drink, it is advisable to drink bottled water during your safari, especially when out in the wild. It is important to remember that is still a big threat in Kenya. If you intend to get intimate with someone, make sure to use appropriate protection.
