Kisumu
Kisumu is situated along the shores of Lake Victoria approximately 6hrs form Nairobi.
It is both the principal lake port in Kenya as well as its third largest city. The
city is accessible by air, road, rail, ferry and even boda-boda. Kisumu has a wide
variety of attractions that include;
Kisumu Museum
Kisumu Museum was established in 1980, and it consists of a series of outdoor pavilions.
The pavilions house artifacts, enclosures for snakes, numerous aquaria with a variety
of fish from Lake Malawi and many other animals. The museum also has exhibits with
the largest and most important exhibition being Ber-gi-dala (a recreation of a traditional
Luo homestead which also explains the origins of the Luo people and their migration
to Kenya.)
Kisumu Impala Sanctuary
Located about 3km from Kisumu city, Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is home to a wide variety
of animals that include impalas, hippos, leopards, bird species and reptiles. The
sanctuary is made up of grassland and woodland ecosystem and also hosts some endangered
animals held up in
Hippo Point
Located near the village of dunga a few kilometers south west of Kisumu, Hippo point
is not really known for the areas occasional hippos despite its name but rather
as a viewing point visitors mainly enjoy the point’s unobstructed sunsets over the
lake. Other places to visit while in Kisumu include kisumu bird sanctuary, Ruma
National Park, Kit-Mikayi (a rock formation), and Ndere Island
