Kenya Vacations
Lake Victoria in Kenya
Lake Victoria is the largest fresh water Lake in Africa and 2nd largest in the world.
The Africa's finest fishing ground sparkles prettily in the dark as the friendly
Luo fishermen catch
fish at night. The rising sun at dawn causes the milky waters to change color which
is a very magnificent watch around the 3000 Islands with beautiful warm sandy beaches.
The lake was named after the Queen of England and is shared by three countries.
A British, John Speke discovered the lake in 1858 while exploring for the source
of the Nile.
The lake is in Kenya's 3rd largest town Kisumu that is 350km from Kenya's
capital city Nairobi by road.
One can also connect to Kisumu by air. Powerboats connect Prominent Islands like
Rusinga, Mfungamano and Takawiri. For overnight travelers there is a circuit of
resorts in each of the three main Islands. A favorite room in Mfungamano Island
is one that former US President Jimmy Carter Slept in 2001. Rock paintings on Mfungamano
Island and the Mary Leakey Archeological site, fishing, water sports and boat safaris
that induce sublime relaxation in Africa's biggest lake keep you occupied. Other
Islands are easily accessible by air among them the tiny bird Island gVancouver
Islandh. Here bird watchers would be spoilt for choice as tree canopies are literally
covered with birds.
The Nile perch, which weighs around 150 kg is a wonderful catch in the lake and
also happens to be a delicious eating. The fish has turned to cannibalism thus feeds
on smaller fish due to lack of food. Humanitarian triumph in Lake Victoria is the
marvelous defeat of water hyacinth that once threatened to choke the waters. A place
to be is Ndere National Park that features some species of water bird, hippos, snakes,
crocodiles and the sitatunga antelope. Impala Park Game Sanctuary and animal orphanage
provides an opportunity with the rare sitatunga antelope, the hyenas, among others.
Wide scenery of local traditional crafts and custom is in Kisumu Museum.
