Lamu Island Town Kenya

Lamu Island is considered as both a national monument and a masterpiece of culture. Popularly known for its architectural characteristics, the areas culture and way of life has highly been influenced by past visitors that include the Portuguese explorers, Turkish traders and the Omani Arabs. The uniqueness of Lamu island is coupled by the fact that it is host to three Museums and a Fort with an impressive exhibition space. Moreover, the island has no vehicles hence the dominant form of transport is donkeys, bicycles and dhows. The best way to access Lamu from the outside world would be through air as it is served by an airstrip at Manda Island.


Fun activities in Lamu town include exploring the town, relaxing on the beaches and attending indoor and outdoor cultural activities that include; traditional dhow races, bao games, henna paintings, donkey races and Islamic calligraphy competitions. Visitors can also take a trip to Takwa Ruins on Manda Island by sailing on dhows as that is the only way to connect from Lamu to Manda.
