Mombasa City in Kenya
The Coastal Town of Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya and is also the
largest Port on the Coast of East Africa. A common sight in Mombasa is the `Tusks`
that spell the letter `M` for Mombasa which welcomes you to the heart of the city.
The city is located 500mks from Nairobi and is connected to it by Air, highway and
railway. The airport that links the town to the rest of world is known as Moi international
Airport Mombasa.
Mombasa town is greatly valued as a Tourist destination because of its historical significance,
rides on traditional trade ships (dhows), architectural buildings, a string of beautiful
beaches, tropical ambiance, diverse marine life and friendly people. The greatest
historical attraction here is probably the Fort Jesus which was built by the Portuguese
in 1593.The Fort has a Museum that displays different artifacts like weapons (canons)
used to defend the Fort, torture rooms and prison cells where slaves were kept in
captivity before being traded. In addition there is a bell that was used to inform
the locals to hide from slave capturers.
Various places to visit in Mombasa include; Mamba village, Bamburi Nature Trail;
the largest animal Sanctuary in the town that houses enormous variety of flora and
fauna, Bombolulu workshop and even Shimba Hills National Park. Mombasa also has
various restaurants that offer a range of delicacies ranging from international
cuisine to local and traditional dishes
