Nyahururu town in Kenya
Nyahururu town lies east of Nakuru at approximately 200kms from Nairobi and was
first founded as Thomson Falls after the spectacular 70 meter high falls which drains
from the Aberdare mountain ranges. The region is mainly agricultural and have recently
started flower farming one of the main cash crops in Kenya.
The main attraction site in Nyahururu is the Thomson falls which gets its name from
Sir Joseph Thompson, a geologist and the first European to walk from Mombasa to
Lake Victoria in the 1880s.The area is also popular for the simple fact of being
near the equator. Another attraction is the diminishing Lake Ol Bolossat threatened
by robust use of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers used by the farmers surrounding
this lake. The lake is famed as a bird watcher’s paradise.
Nyahururu also has a Kenya wildlife service center located 5km from the town along
Nyahururu-Nyeri highway where visitors can watch elephants and hippos in their natural
habitat.
